WHICH LOCTITE TO USe

The below information was taken from the Loctite Industrial Product Guide and as you can see all of the temp. ranges are -65 to 300 degrees F., except 272 red which is up to 450 degrees. The cure times vary except they all require 24 hours to cure fully. Hope you can save some space with this added information. Loctite also has Gasketing material, Thread sealing for fluid fittings, Retaining Compound and Bonding Adhesives. Later!

222 - Purple - Low strength threadlocker, designed for percision metal fasteners under 3/4". Protect threads from rust and corrosion. Removable with hand tools. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure Speed 20 min. Full 24 hrs.

243 - Blue -  Loctite 242 Nut and Bolt Locker (part #3370) Medium strength threadlocker for fasteners up to 3/4". Cures reliably even on stainless steel. Tolerant of oil and other contamination. Protects threads from rust and corrosion. Parts can be disassembled with hand tools. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure speed 15 min. Full 24 hrs.

262 - Red - Loctite 271 Stud Lock (part #3371) Permanent strength threadlocker for fasteners up to 3/4". Designed for extreem enviromental/chemical conditions. Especially useful for holding tight Grade 5 and 8 fasteners. Protects threads from rust and corrosion. Localized heating and hand tools required for disassembly. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure speed 30 min. Full 24 hrs.

270 - Green - Loctite 290 Penetrating Thread Locker (part #3372) High strength threadlocker for fasteners up to 3/4". Secures long studs and bolts. Intended for parts that do not require disassembly. Cures fast and reliably on most metal surfaces. Seals threads against industrial fluids. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure speed 15 min. Full 24 hrs.

272 - Red - Hi-temp/hi-strength formula. Suited for temperatures up to 450 degrees F. Fast cure on most surfaces including "as received" fasteners. Recommended for bolts up to 1 1/2" in diameter. Heat and hand tools required for disassemgly. Temp range -65 to 450 degrees F. Cure speed 60 min. Full 24 hrs.

277 - Red - High strength for locking fasteners up to 1 1/2". Prevents fasteners from loosening due to shock, heat or vibration (Good for Harley-Davidson parts). Protects threads from rust and corrosion. Removable with heat and hand tools. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure speed 60 min. Full 24 hrs.

290 - Green - Medium strength threadlocker for pre-assembled bolts up to 1/2". Penetrates threads by capillary action: simplifies preventive maintenance. Secures set screws and other assemblies after settings are completed. Used to seal welds and porous metal parts. Protects threads from rust and corrosion. Temp range -65 to 300 degrees F. Cure speed 10 min. Full 24 hrs.

Loctite 609 Retaining Compound (part #3373) was developed especially for bonding cylindrical parts such as mounting bearings or bushings into housings as well as mounting pulleys onto shafts, to improve strength of press fit bearings etc.........

  • Locquic Cleaner and Primer (part #3376)is used to clean the surfaces and to speed the cure. Especially important on certain inactive surfaces such as stainless steel......
  •
  • Additionally Loctite makes Pipe Sealant with Teflon (part#3374) and a Gasket Eliminator 515 (part #3375).
  • super easy way to get the locktite bolts loose WITHOUT the use of heat! Just put a dab of fresh locktite on the bolt and wait about 10 minutes and it`ll loosen all the old set-up locktite! Tried it and the bolts felt like they`d never had any locktite on them! NEAT TIP.

Two more goodies from loctite: They make a two-part compound with `weld` in the name that is for fixing or adding material to broken castings. It is fantastically strong and will stick well in real-world settings that are not surgically clean. It`s something to try before you throw out that irreplaceable but cracked part.

Another is a thread restorer that allows quick and very strong repairs of stripped fasteners. I`ve used it and think it`s probably a good permanent fix for anything but the most critical fasteners. You have to be quick to use it, though--it hardens a lot faster than the instructions indicate. These would be good items to have when on the road for emergency repairs, and might well afford some permanent solutions.
